40 years fostering research in pharmacology

It all started in a pharmacy in Manresa (Barcelona).

Dr. Antoni Esteve i Subirana (1902‒1979), a fifth-generation pharmacist in a lineage of apothecaries dating back to 1787, started preparing original compounds in the back room of the family drugstore in the 1920s.

A few years later, his passion for research would lead him to found Laboratoris Dr. Esteve, S.A., a pharmaceutical company that started out with a few vitamin supplements and went on to produce the first arsenic compound against syphilis and the first sulfonamides to be manufactured in Spain.

Building on his scientific legacy, the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation was founded 40 years ago.

40 years fostering research in pharmacology

1983

Creation of the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation

Three years after the death of Dr. Antoni Esteve, his wife Paquita Soler and his children Josep, Montserrat, and Joan decided to honor the memory of the illustrious pharmacist by creating the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation to promote research in pharmacology.

1984

The Foundation’s first international symposium

The Foundation got underway with Dr. Josep Esteve i Soler (1930-2019) serving as its president and Dr. Sergi Erill (1938-2020) as its scientific director. Both looked to the model of the CIBA Foundation, founded in 1949, which Lord William Henry Beveridge defined as a “laboratory—not for mixing compounds, but rather for mixing scientists”.

The first international symposium organized by the Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation brought together 30 researchers from all over the world who were investigating protein binding of drugs; Cornell University Medical College’s Marcus Reidenberg acted as the moderator. This event was followed by many other international symposiums dealing with subjects as diverse as the pharmacology of sports, optimal dosing, and sexual pharmacology.

1989

The Foundation establishes its research prizes

The Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation research prizes aim to identify the best pharmacologic study published by Spanish authors in an international journal. The first researchers to receive the award were Dr. Jesús A. García Sevilla and Dr. J.K. Zubieta, working in the Pharmacology Department of the School of Medicine at the University of the Basque Country, for their article about antidepressants published in the British Journal of Pharmacology. Subsequently, 17 prizes have been awarded to researchers at centers all over Spain.

The investigators speak

Disseminating science centered on humanism

Pilar D’Ocon

Department of Pharmacology, University of Valencia

“I think it’s essential to have this kind of foundations. The Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation has taken the trouble to maintain a level of quality that ensures the prestige of the acts they organize. I think that they have prioritized scientific veracity and public benefit. The Foundation has earned the respect of the scientific community, especially in pharmacology, the field that I know best.”

Maribel Lucena

Department of Pharmacology, University of Málaga

“I know of no other organs or institutions that altruistically train people in skill areas that are truly neglected by others. I would also underline that these activities are very well planned out and executed by an excellent selection of professionals, as well as the Foundation’s efforts to provide documentation and support for all the subjects dealt with so that people who have not been able to attend can also benefit from the information discussed and imparted”

Xavier Carné

Clinical Pharmacology Unit, Hospital Clínic de Barcelona

“Clinical pharmacology is a young specialty, a specialty with a great future but a traditional lack of institutional support. The Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation provides important support for the specialty. I believe it is one of the pillars on which the specialty can feel supported by society. I believe the Foundation has played an important role in this sense.”

F. Rodríguez de Fonseca

Director of the Hospital Carlos Haya de Málaga Foundation

“The public administrations fail to recognize pharmacology, one of the fundamental pillars of medicine, as a science capable of solving problems. Pharmacology should be promoted as an exemplary science that can be as important as genetics, genomics, or molecular biology. The Dr. Antoni Esteve Foundation’s defense of pharmacology is fundamental.”

Roser González

Chair of Genetics, University of Barcelona

“One of the Foundation’s outstanding characteristics is quality. They have ensured that the speakers are great specialists, that the participants are actively involved in the field, and then they have compiled all their contributions and included them in different publications. I think the tasks they carry out have great value”

Maribel Martín

Chair of Pharmacology, URJC

“In my laboratory, I want to communicate with the man in the street, but if nobody approaches, this can be very difficult. I’m not going to shout out the window. Luckily, the Foundation often acts as my megaphone”
